Wednesday Blog

Wednesday - Take one of your models, strategies, etc. from the Whole number multiplication and division section and post it and tell why you picked this one and then comment on someone elses.

  1. I choose the Commutative Property of Multiplication of whole numbers.

    For Example: a*b= b*a
5*3= 3*5..I will show the students that the answer will be the same on both sides.

    Answer: 15

  2. Multiplication by 10^n

    53*10 = (5*10 + 3)10
    = (5*10)10 + 3*10
    = 5 (10*10) + 3*10
    = 5* 10^2 + 3*10
    = 5* 10^2 + 3*10 + 0*1
    = 530

Multiplication by 10^n is important for students to learn because exponents are going to be used throughout their schooling and later on in life.

  3. Anonymous said...I would use the distributive property
    5x23
break the te factors into tens and ones
    5x20=100
    5x3=15
    100+15=100
I choose this because i struggled with it on the homework. It keep my mind thinking at a young age want to encourage kids to continue to think use their mind it is not about the answer being right or wrong get a concept of what is going one.

  4. Yulanda I like the cummuative property simple it let's the kids know no matter how the numbers are presented the outcome of the answer will be the same.

  5. Array and Area Model

I can make a total of 6 blueberry muffins in one pan. If I make 4 batches of muffins using this pan how many muffins can I make total?
    6 x 4 = 24

(Bear with me this is my illustration)

    000 000 000 000 000000000000
    000 +000 +000 +000 = 000000000000 (24)

I like the idea of how you can use the array and area model because it is easy to visualize the amounts being multiplied.

  6. the illustration should look like this - SORRY GUYS!

    000 000 000 000
    000 + 000 +000 +000

    = 000000000000000000000000

  7. to Caroline: I am a bit confused as to how you solved the problem. The symbols used like * is that x or the dot used to represent multiplication?

  8. Katie: The symbol * is representing multiplication. And I agree, I feel that visual learners will understand the array models much more easily.

  9. I like the array model. I think it is a great way for students to learn that they are adding in the tens ones hundreds columns as well. I think this is key in math!

  10. Helen I think that way is great too! And the fact that you choose it because you struggled with it!

  11. Distributive Property of multiplication

The 2 outside of the parenthesis must be multiplied by each number inside of the parenthesis.

    2 (2 +4) = 12

    2 * 2 = 4 2 * 4 = 8

    4 + 8 = 12

  12. Yulanda

I agree it is very important for students to understand the commutative property. This will allow students to commute the numbers so it is easier for them to solve the problem.
